Datacard CR805 Product Review
The Datacard CR805 is a retransfer ID printer that delivers ultimate card program security and flexibility. This secure and reliable card printer offers fantastic full-colour, over-the-edge, single-sided printing. It is also fully capable of encoding various card types including contact/contactless smart cards and magnetic stripe cards with just a simple upgrade. If you have had issues with card duplication and poor quality, then this printer will solve that problem for you.
The Datacard CR805 uses Pigment Ink Technology. This allows for long-lasting, UV-fade resistant ID cards that won't diminish over time. It also helps to extend the card life and reduces the cost for reprints. Opting for this printer means you are guaranteed vibrant colour cards that print right over the edge meaning no white borders on show.
The CR805 is one of the most reliable card printers on the current market and is a popular choice for our education customers. If an issue arises with the printer, you are backed by Datacards 30-month standard warranty cover on both the printer and printhead.
Everyday tasks such as the installation of the printer driver, upgrades, ribbon changes and printer could not be easier. If you also need to train other staff members on how to use the machine, then this again is not an issue, and you will soon become an expert.
Once you receive your new printer, simply unbox, connect and follow the simple instructions, and you are ready to go. If you do run into difficulty, then our dedicated Datacard support team are on hand to answer any questions you may have.
Security is well thought out with the CR805 card printer. As the images last longer, you can more accurately authenticate each cardholder. As well as this, there optional locks to help safeguard against unauthorised printer use, a TPM module included in every printer and the secure boot prevents system start-up at any indication of malware. With the option on lamination, this also protects the cards for longer.
With the CR805, there is the option to add on Magnetic stripe encoding or Contactless / MIFARE Encoder upgrade.
Other options include:
ISO 7811 three-track option (high- and low-coercivity).
JIS Type II single-track option.
Support for standard and custom data formats.
The CR805 is a retransfer printer. Retransfer printing technology is different to DTC as it uses two ribbon types, a colour ink ribbon and a separate retransfer film. Step 1 of the process involves the printer using the colour ink ribbon to print your image directly on the retransfer film, and then a heat roller to transfer the image over the entire surface of a card leaving no white borders giving the card a more professional look. The application of the retransfer film to the card provides a bonus layer of protection and a glossy photo-like finish, which helps extend card life meaning your costs are kept down as re-issuance becomes a thing of the past.
The CR805 accepts CR80 credit-card sized cards.
The CR805 is set up to manage smaller to medium print volumes and in a standard working week totalling 35 hours you can print 3,500 single-sided (CMYKP) cards or 2,310 double-sided (CMYKP-KP) cards, all in exceptional quality.
Full-colour printing:
Single-sided (CMYKP) is up to 100 cards per hour
Double-sided (CMYKP-KP) is up to 66 cards per hour
Ethernet and USB connection are standard features with this machine. Having the ability to connect to both a network and single desktop means there is flexibility to change printing requirements later on.
Operating Systems
Standard USB/Ethernet ports and the browser-based Printer Manager helps you integrate SD Series printers into third-party applications as well as existing systems.
As the CR805 is a retransfer printer, it is slightly bigger in size than other Datacard models. The exact dimensions are: Length 54.34 cm x Width 25.53 cm x Height 39.68 cm. Its weight is 12.7 kg.
The CR805 has given Datacard a shiny new look. Although bigger than standard printers, with its sophisticated all-black exterior it gracefully fits into modern day office spaces.
We award the Datacard CR805 three stars out of five.
This is due to it being one of the most reliable card printers and its 30-month standard warranty cover is a bonus. With the images lasting longer, this also allows for more accurate authentification and therefore increased security.
But its large size makes it difficult to fit comfortably on an office desk and its slow printing speeds mean it can't match the production volume of a DTC printer. This is why we recommend the Fargo HDP500 Retransfer printer as it is not only cheaper but it has a faster print speed.
