Fargo DTC4500e Product Review
The DTC4500e is a robust and reliable ID badge printer.
It's been developed for high-volume printing on a recurring daily basis.
The printer and encoder are designed in a modular way that allows it to be changed to the needs of the organisation using it, as they grow.
If you’re looking to print staff ID cards, membership, gift, loyalty and access control cards, then make sure you take a closer look at the full product review below.
The DTC4500e helps to print highly secure cards. Vibrant colours, detailed monochrome text and photo-like images are guaranteed time after time, with full edge-to-edge coverage. By adding the additional lamination unit will wrap your card in an extra protective layer also giving them a glossy finish.
The printer and print head both have a three-year warranty. Alongside this, we offer post-sale technical support from our dedicated in-house team of printer experts.
The SmartScreen™ graphic display makes changing a ribbon, cleaning the printer, and monitoring prints simple. The user is prompted when a task is required, and the SmartScreen™ keeps the user updated with how many cards are left to be printed, it's convenient for users who are in between tasks.
The setup process for all Fargo printers is easy. Inside the box is a quick set up guide which helps get the user connected, and ready to use in a matter of minutes.
A built-in security feature that the DTC4500e has is password-protection. There’s also an option to add locking card hoppers as well, and this means that is the user leaves the printer unoccupied, the cards cannot be taken directly from the hopper. It's a great feature for larger organisations or those wanting to print a batch of secure cards.
Concerning visual card security, a fluorescent panel (UV) layer can be added to each card providing a cost-effective and increase in card security. A card lamination module can be added as an upgrade to increase security. Adding a secure overlaminate makes cloned cards easier spot.
Encoding options for this printer include, magnetic stripe encoding, contact and contactless encoding and MIFARE encoding.
The DTC4500e is a direct-to-card ID card printer that, like other DTC’s in the Fargo range, uses dye-sublimation print and prints to the industry standard of 300dpi. Unlike similar printers in the industry, the DTC4500e is flexible; it lets the user adapt the printer with modules as and when they’re needed.
This machine can print to standard CR80 cards (credit card sized thickness) from a range of materials including PVC and PET. The ID card printer can also print to CR79 adhesive backed cards.
In one hour, the printer can print 225 full-colour single-sided cards, that’s approximately 16 seconds per card. For printing dual-sided cards, it’ll only take an additional eight seconds. If a user is looking to print single-colour (monochrome/Black text) cards, the DTC4500e will print it in just 6 seconds.
Both USB 2.0 and Ethernet connection come as standard with this printer, with the ability to add a Wi-Fi upgrade.
An important thing to know before purchasing a printer is what operating system the card printer will work with. The Fargo DTC4500e works with the following systems, Windows® XP, Windows Vista® (32 bit & 64 bit) / Server 2003 & 2008, Windows® 7, Windows® 8 (32 bit & 64 bit), MAC OS X 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8/10.9, Linux Ubuntu 12.04, Debian 7.0, Fedora 18, Mandriva 2011, Red Hat 6.4 and Open Suse 12.3.
The base model is 24cm in height, 45cm in width, and 23cm in depth. This size makes it perfectly suitable for any office environment and is often used in meeting or reception areas.
The Fargo DTC4500e has a simplistic aesthetic that would sit well in an office environment. Like other Fargo DTC printers, this machine has additional modules that also follow a similar aesthetic, so any upgrades look natural.

After completing our in-depth review, we have awarded the DTC4500e, four stars out of five. Combining the dye-sub print-quality with UV and lamination print ensures a high-quality yet ultra-secure card every time. Being able to connect to both USB for single application or Ethernet for a network connection also gives the additional printing flexibility.
Like all Fargo models, this desktop printer is ENERGY STAR® certified for efficient energy consumption and uses eco-friendly (ECO) refill ribbons. If we could make one change, we would look to increase the output hopper to 200 cards, therefore, matching the input hopper, so the user can complete longer print runs.
