Fargo HDP5000 – Complexity simplified.
The HDP5000 is designed to take card printing a step further.
It’s easy to use, reliable and comes with optional card encoding technologies to elevate your card printing.
Built on a fourth-generation High-Definition Printing® platform, the HDP5000 ID badge printer produces exceptional quality card printing.
It's an excellent choice for larger organisations looking to print ultra-secure photo ID cards.
The Fargo HDP5000 is a retransfer printer, ideal for advanced ID card printing. As a retransfer printer, the HDP5000 is great for printing complex designs containing block colours, printing large volumes of cards (say, over 500) and for printing on smart cards. So if that sounds familiar, then the HDP5000 may be just what you’re looking for. Alternatively, if you need to print a very basic design onto a lower number of plain plastic cards, not access control cards, the Fargo DTC1250e ID card printer might be a better fit.
Wonder what the HDP stands for in HDP5000? It’s High-Definition Printing® - and that’s exactly what you’ll get. The printer provides superior print quality and it’s HDP technology delivers sharp photo-like images and crisp, detailed text. Cards will be durable, too, with a layer of HDP film added between the card image and the outside world. As a retransfer printer, the HDP5000 also provides full printing coverage of the card, so the end result is similar to cards produced with large-scale professional presses. In a nutshell, the HDP5000 will print the cards you’ve always dreamed of.
Set up is that simple, we did it ourselves. You can watch our how-to set-up video here. The printer’s simple design and operating system makes using the HDP5000 easy. Ribbon changes, cleaning cycles – it all requires minimal training. You’ll be swapping and changing ribbons in mere minutes as both the print ribbon and film are inserted in easy-to-load cartridges.
The HDP5000 takes around 29 seconds to print a full colour card using a YMCK retransfer film. Please note that adding additional transfer films such as single or dual-sided lamination will result in a longer print speed, but still less than 60 seconds. if you think that’s a little longer than your standard direct-to-card printer, don’t forget the HDP5000 is doing a lot more work – you’ll be able to tell that by the difference in quality.
Taking ID and plastic card security one step further, the HDP5000 is the first of its kind to help prevent card cloning and duplication. Card security features include a holographic overlaminate option, which lets users apply a custom holographic image to the front of an ID card, which can include a business logo or image. This visual security feature makes it easier than ever to spot cloned cards.
When you buy a Fargo HDP5000 ID card printer through Digital ID, you’ll get EasyBadge Lite design software for free. Usually worth £195, it’s the best ID card software on the market and even creates a sample design for you. It’ll have you up and running in no time at all but please note, it’s only compatible with Microsoft Windows and is limited to 100 records.
The base model comes with USB connectivity as standard. If you upgrade to iCLASS and encoding, the printer comes with single wire Ethernet that allows network connectivity for multiple users. The HDP5000 printer is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, Servers 2012, 2012 R2, 2008, 2008 R2, 2003.
When it comes to choosing which cards to print on, the HDP5000 offers more options than ever before. Easily print to CR80 credit card sized cards with a thickness of 0.762mm – 1.27mm. Print on proximity, smart (access control) and mag stripe cards, laminated PVC cards, PET, PETG and ABS cards. Note that ABS and PVC cards are not recommended for use in the HDP5000 lamination module.
Fargo backs the HDP5000 with a lifetime printhead warranty and a three-year warranty on all other aspects of the machine. In the unlikely event that you have any issues with the HDP5000, our in-house support team are on-hand when you need.

Q: Does the Fargo HDP5000 support over-the-edge card printing?

Our verdict is to award the Fargo HDP5000 4.5 stars out of 5.
The printer is more than its good looks, offering a superior print quality and the ability to print to uneven surfaced cards.
The printer may be more expensive than direct-to-card printers, but as a retransfer printer, it offers much more value and is very competitive. If we could make one change, it would be to look at improving the overall print speed.
All in all, its reliability and High-Definition Printing® technology make the HDP5000 an excellent choice for large organisations issuing high volumes of cards.
