IDP Smart 70 (Starter-system) Product Review
The IDP Smart 70 is a high-quality ID badge printer with the ability to produce large volumes of cards, all in stunning resolution. Being equipped with plenty of security measures means you can focus solely on printing without having to worry about external interruptions like printer theft. With the option to add on additional upgrades, improving your printer to match your business needs has never been easier.
The IDP Smart70 is a full-system ID card printer. Using dye sublimation combined with a resolution of 300dpi creates sharp, vibrant images to ensure each print is of the highest quality. It is useful to note the edge-to-edge printing leaves a thin white border around the edge of the card.
That confident in their product range, IDP Smart is the only ID card printer manufacturer to provide customers with a 5-year printer warranty with every machine outdoing like for like competition by a minimum of two years. (Printer heads are only covered for 3 year by manufacturer’s warranty).
The easy-to-follow LCD screen makes operation simple and will alert you when the ribbon needs replacing or if a clean of the printer is required. Upgrades are easily made with the no-tool strategy that any IT technician would be able to do in minutes.
With the simple step-by-step printer guide and installation disk, setting up the IDP Smart 70 is easy and quick and will have you printing cards in no time. If any issues occur, IDP is always on-hand to help with just a phone call.
The IDP Smart 70 is equipped with plenty of security features for access control and data encryption to stop printer theft and ensure your ID cards are safely printed. This printer comes with Kensington locks on each station as standard and can be set to a specific authorised PC to eliminate outside control. Everyone is also encouraged to set up a password to ensure complete security not just outside but inside the printer. The Smart 70 can also encrypt data on the USB to check it is not damaging to the printer.
The IDP Smart 70 offers many encoding options, including contact and contactless card, DesFire, iCLASS, Magnetic Stripe and MiFare encoding. There is also the options to upgrade from single-sided to dual-sided printing to even dual-sided lamination printing as well as hopper upgrades and printer locks.
The IDP Smart 70 is a retransfer printer. This is where the design is printed onto a laminate film which is then thermally bonded to the card instead of printing the image on the card surface through the ribbon. This is a HDP (High Definition Printing) Process.
This printer works only with CR80 credit-card sized cards.
The IDP Smart 70 is designed for printing large volumes of cards. Based on a 35-hour working week you can print 35,000 monochrome cards, 7,875 full-colour (YMKCO) cards or 5,740 full-colour (YMCKOK) cards.
Monochrome: Prints a card in 3.6 seconds, 1,000 cards per hour
Full-colour (YMKCO): Prints a card in 16 seconds, 225 cards per hour
Full-colour (YMCKOK): Prints a card in 22 seconds, 164 cards per hour
Ethernet, Network and USB connection are standard features with the Smart 70, offering connections to both a network and a desktop to increase the flexibility of printing. The Smart 70 can also use the network printer server to encode MS, contactless and contactless cards through the network.
Standard USB/Ethernet ports and the browser-based Printer Manager helps you integrate printers into third-party applications as well as existing systems.
Slightly larger than other printers, the exact dimensions for the IDP Smart 70 are: 240mm (W) x 214mm (L) x 305mm (H), and it weighs 6.3kgs.
The user-friendly design and looking slightly like a stereo system, the Smart 70 offers a modern twist to everyday printers in its cool shades of grey. Slightly bigger than other printers, the Smart 70 will take up a little more room on an office desk, but as it is a full system, it offers much more printing capabilities, hence why it is a little bigger.

After testing all aspects of the IDP Smart 70 Starter-System, we have awarded it three and a half stars out of five.
This is due to it being a starter-system. But the starter system is still fully equipped to handle large volumes whilst still printing quickly. It also provides plenty of security with data encryption and Kensington locks.
The full-system has been awarded five stars and you can view it here.
